At-Home Abortion Information

Get the answers you need on risks and side-effects of self-managed at-home abortions with abortion pills

abortion in gulfport

Abortion is illegal in Mississippi, which means many women in Gulport and surrounding areas are choosing not to drive to an out-of-state abortion clinic. Instead, many women have turned to ordering abortion pills online. Abortion by mail may look like an easy, stress-free, safe option, but we’re here to help you understand the risks involved, what not to do, the information you need to know ahead of time, what to expect, and what to do if things go wrong at home.

If you are considering an abortion, your best first step is an ultrasound to confirm a viable intrauterine pregnancy and rule out an ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening. An ultrasound can also tell you how far along you are. Book a cost-free consultation and ultrasound appointment. No insurance is needed and same-day appointments are often available.

Abortion Pills By Mail Safety Concerns

The abortion pill comes with a black box label, which is the highest level of caution assigned by the FDA. Taking the abortion pill without seeing a doctor or having an ultrasound is never recommended. The side effects range from unpleasant (cramping, bleeding, nausea, headache, fever) to life-threatening (sepsis, rupturing of the uterus, undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy, and more). Due to a lack of regulations and unsafe medications, the FDA also issued a warning not to order pills by mail.

We put you and your safety first, and we'd never recommend an unsafe option. We do not refer for or provide abortion services; however, we can give you the answers you need to make an informed choice. If you’ve already ordered pills, we can still provide you with an ultrasound to confirm how far along you are. We believe women deserve to get answers and services from a place that does not profit from their reproductive health decisions. Call us today to get started.

At-Home Abortion Pill Side Effects

After both doses of medication have been taken, you can expect bleeding, cramping, and contractions to start between one and four hours after taking the second pill.

Other side effects and risks of a medical abortion include but are not limited to:

  • Heavy bleeding

  • Abdominal pain

  • Infection

  • Fever or chills

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded

  • Nausea, diarrhea and vomiting

  • Allergic reactions to medications

  • Incomplete abortion

If you fill more than a pad an hour, have a fever over 103 degrees, or are experiencing allergic reactions or vomiting for over 24 hours, contact 911 or your doctor immediately.

Before an abortion, it’s important to talk to a medical professional about your health history and what to do in the event of an allergic reaction to the medication which can be fatal. In states that have been measuring the side effects, reported complications from the abortion pill have increased in the past several years.

If you have only taken the first dose of the abortion pill and change your mind, it is still your choice. Contact us immediately or if it’s after hours, learn more about how to continue your pregnancy.
